Hey You, I could be your Girlfriend...

World’s End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland
Grade: A

On World’s End Girlfriend Last.Fm page, user “Silke_Neryn” writes: “Hurtbreak Wonderland is just about as good as music gets. It's pure magic. And wonder. And love. And everything else that matters. It's that simple.” Whoever said not to trust strangers you meet on the Internet just got their thesis proven wrong. Hurtbreak Wonderland is Japanese composer Katsuhiko Maeda’s sixth release in seven years under the World’s End Girlfriend moniker, and in a year of great music plenty presents itself as an unexpected contender for the greatest. The music on Wonderland helps explain why clichés developed in music writing … it is sweeping, beautiful, and genius. The music uniquely and densely blends the genres of classical, electronic, IDM, hip hop and noise music, always somehow fitting these different pieces together elegantly and never overwhelmingly. No vocals are present on the album, which turns out to be the album’s strength; the music itself is so emotionally powerful that it lends listener to interpret with their own voice and experiences. Wonderland is never a task to listen to (which is impressive considering four of its ten tracks run over ten minutes), and continuously opens up with new sounds upon repeated listens. Never predictable, but always impressive, this is a CD anyone with the ability to appreciate music shouldn’t skip.
